As far as I’m concerned, last week’s showdown at Naval Base Coronado lived up to the hype and delivered some bangers. Granted, there were hiccups in the Truck Series and O’Reilly Series contests. Yet the atmosphere built on America’s 250th birthday paid off in spades with great racing across all three series. Now the Cup Series heads north to wine country for back-to-back road course races with the Toyota Save Mart 350. Sonoma Raceway also ushers in the beginning of NASCAR’s five-race In-Season Challenge. Don’t forget to submit your free bracket entry on NASCAR’s mothership for a little side bet (hopefully) lasting through July.
Sonoma’s Comps
Sonoma is a classic stock car road course with two primary comps: Watkins Glen and Circuit of the Americas. Hybrid courses of old – including the Charlotte Roval that was left for dead earlier this year – and the street courses of recent years can be thrown in at lower weightings if you want to go that deep. You can see a tight connection in the plot below between Sonoma Raceway and the comp tracks for many teams ranked in the upper half. As always, we lean on the ifantasyrace.com Similar Track Guide to double-check our comp track mappings that go into our pre- and post-qualifying power ratings.
