The San Diego Street Course’s Comps
NASCAR and the United States Navy present us with an early birthday gift at Naval Base Coronado in beautiful San Diego. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Coronado Island and viewing the base from Point Loma; an awesome location for this commemorative race taking place just two weeks before our nation’s America 250 celebration. This one-off road course parallels the Chicago Street Course enough as a flat circuit carved out of surface streets. “Streets” may not be the best way to characterize most of Coronado’s asphalt surface but that’s effectively what the drivers will be dealing with this weekend. Comp track mapping via the ifantasyrace.com Similar Track Guide also pulls in the other road courses and hybrids as secondary comps to build out driver resumes.
Race Details
- Track type: street course
- Track length: 3.4 miles
- Laps/total miles: 75 / 255
- Stage lengths (laps): 20 / 20 /35
This week’s pre-qualifying power rating plot shows comp track performance versus current form since this is a completely new track without priors. Also note that Connor Zilisch (#88) and Austin Hill (#33) are not in the plot below, but should be factors in this race. SVG leads the pack, as expected, though a handful of strong road course performers like Tyler Reddick, Ty Gibbs, and Michael McDowell stand above the rest of the field. This YouTube video link of a sim run through the circuit is an excellent preview of what to expect this weekend.
