A solid 13 game slate awaits us on a clear Monday across the United States. Three series are in the books in the early goings of this 2026 season, giving us a little more clarity on what these teams are made of. No need to overreact to extreme over- and underperformers but feathering current data into the mix is important to give our preseason expectations relevant context. I’m working with 85% projected and 15% actual data at this point in the season. The trending offensive production plots are very much up-and-down with just a few games completed but still interesting enough to throw in as a visual. Without further delay, here’s a quick look at six of today’s matchups in the MLB Morning Breakdown for 4-6-2026.
CHICAGO CUBS @ TAMPA BAY RAYS (TBR -110, 8)

J Taillon (R) vs. S McClanahan (L)
Rays’ starting pitcher Shane McClanahan earns the edge over Cubs’ right-hander Jameson Taillon despite the latter’s clean 4.2 innings against the Angels. Shane ran up on a bumpy 5th inning against the Brewers last week as his command left plenty of room for improvement. The Cubs certainly appreciate working at Tropicana Field as opposed to cool and wet Cleveland that sapped some of their mojo. Tampa Bay grinded out a couple much-needed wins in chilly Minneapolis as well despite rough relief pitching to start the campaign.
Bullpen edge could arguably be flipped to Chicago given Tampa Bay’s 7.98 ERA to date. But we’re dealing with short-term results meshed with season-long expectations. (Griffin Jax is better this, right?) Plus the Rays lineup has been in better form than the advantage bar shows – as long as Yandy Diaz keeps mashing at the top of the order. The Cubs get a chance to improve production against lefties while Tampa Bay has thrived against righties. Making hay against Jameson Taillon before exposing their bullpen is the Rays’ path to winning as a small home favorite. McClanahan is indeed the X-factor here given last week’s command issues. I’ve been on the Rays quite a bit this season (how’s that been working out?) and may be again tonight with some confidence in Shane putting together a solid five innings.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS @ CLEVELAND GUARDIANS (CLE -115, 7)

M Wacha (R) vs. T Bibee (R)
Offensive consistency has not been a strong suit of either team in the first portion of this season, although weather has played a key role lately. For the Royals, it’s been more about Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino, and Jac Caglianone getting off to very slow starts. Cleveland’s success in 2026 is not centered on an overpowering lineup, it’s about their pitching and defense. So far, rookie Chase DeLauter has carried the torch for the Guards. Both Michael Wacha and Tanner Bibee generally pitch to contact, giving each lineup an opportunity to hit their way out of their relative funks. Of particular note is the availability of Cleveland high-leverage pitchers Shawn Armstrong and Cade Smith after heavy usage Friday and in yesterday’s doubleheader.

SAN DIEGO PADRES @ PITTSBURGH PIRATES (PIT -135, 8)

G Marquez (R) vs. B Chandler (R)
Two offenses on the upswing square up at PNC Park, although this matchup is more about the starting pitchers than the lineups. Granted, the Bucs are thriving against right-handed pitching as Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, and Ryan O’Hearn are putting in work early this season. Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler probably can’t get away with pitching like he did against Cincinnati. But his counterpart German Marquez will give the Pirates lineup plenty of opportunities tonight. Additional adjustments to San Diego’s bullpen are needed after heavy usage of Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, and Jeremiah Estrada in Boston.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS @ BOSTON RED SOX (MIL -113, 8)

B Woodruff (R) vs. B Bello (R)
Has the Red Sox lineup found its discipline? It looked like the Boston hitters were less apt to chase pitches after the first time around yesterday against the Padres. But is that enough to signal a turnaround? Brandon Woodruff will put them to the test as a big-strikeout, low-walk righty opposing ground-ball contact pitcher Brayan Bello. Although Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe pitched in back-to-back games this weekend, they still have several high-quality relievers to take over for Woodruff. Boston freed up Aroldis Chapman and Justin Slaten yesterday if this contest stays close in the late innings. The key condition is how deep Bello can go without taking too much damage.

SEATTLE MARINERS @ TEXAS RANGERS (TEX -115, 7.5)

L Gilbert (R) vs. J deGrom (R)
Given how Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez are scuffling at the plate, it is hard to envision an offensive gap like the one shown above. But the Rangers have not done much to improve their run scoring situation after nine games in the books. Seattle’s Logan Gilbert yielded 8 runs in a pair of starts despite a decent arsenal of pitches. Simply stated, he’s been hittable as noted by a .407 BABIP. Jacob deGrom is in a similar situation after his debut even though he struck out 7 and did not walk anyone. This is one of the more interesting games on the slate given how both starters are much better than their early results and each lineup has plenty of room for improvement.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES @ SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (PHI -125, 8)

A Painter (R) vs. A Houser (R)
The Phillies are happy to move on from Colorado and Sunday for that matter, as the end of the week typically does not treat them well. While inconsistent, their offense has delivered more bright spots than San Francisco’s in their slow start under new manager Tony Vitello. Andrew Painter was phenomenal in his MLB debut against the Nationals; as was veteran Adrian Houser against San Diego. Painter and a strong high-leverage unit plus a more robust Phillies lineup earns them the favorite tag. Approach the young righty with more hesitancy than what his season numbers say, though the Giants may not be the team to expose him.
