Northern Illinois did not out-rebound St. Mary’s last night. Trendon Hankerson was 0-2 from beyond the arc and the Gaels’ Malik Fitts pulled down 12 rebounds. However, the Huskies managed to cover the +15 with a 49-61 loss by holding St. Mary’s to one of their worst shooting performances of the season. With that W behind us, it’s time for another quick hitter in the NCAAB Road Dog Report for 12/6/2019:
Dartmouth @ South Florida (-8)
The Ivy League’s Dartmouth Big Green head to Tampa for a matchup with the American Conference’s South Florida Bulls. Each have middling records at 5-3 and 4-4, respectively, and are covering the spread with similar success. Both squads bring significant experience to the matchup with upperclassmen leaders starting the season well.
Dartmouth is led by Chris Knight, Aaryn Rai, and James Foye; all of whom have put up at least 10 PPG in this young season. Sophomore Taurus Samuels has made the most of his playing time by contributing nearly 10 PPG. The Big Green needs to be accurate considering they haven’t done a good job in creating second-chance points. That said, they take care of the ball and don’t commit an abundance of fouls.
South Florida’s scoring is fueled by upperclassmen guards David Collins and Laquincy Rideau. The Bulls’ guard-heavy lineup is supported by forward Michael Durr, who is strong on the glass. These guys snag a fair amount of offensive rebounds and can pick your pocket, so Dartmouth will need to continue playing their fundamentally-strong game to keep it close in the Sun Dome tonight.
Getting the Money
The spread moved quickly from South Florida -7.5 to -8, which is interesting considering how well Dartmouth has done against the number this season. They’re 5-2 ATS, including a perfect 4-0 mark on the road. Dartmouth’s road covers began with an outright win at Buffalo to start the season as a 12-point dog. Additionally, they got the money as road dogs in their last two games against Bowling Green and Georgia State.
South Florida is no pushover when it comes to beating the spread. Despite a 4-4 overall ATS record, they’ve gotten it done at home with a 3-2 ATS mark. The Bulls have put together some strong performances in the Sun Dome, including their recent 65-55 win over Furman as a 4-point dog. Furman is a quality opponent that we rate highly, and South Florida’s win against the Paladins could explain this (arguably) inflated line today.
I rate them slightly higher than Dartmouth, mainly due to a better strength of schedule, but must take the meaty 8 points tonight. This is a solid number that covers the six big key numbers, which should prove useful in a close game that the Bulls should take by a slim margin.
Ticket: Dartmouth +8
